How To Make Sea Moss Gel

Ingredients
dried gold sea moss from St. Lucia | 0.7 oz | 20 g | ~1 cup sea moss |
spring or filtered water | 12 fl oz | 340 g | 1 1/2 cup water |
lime | 2.5 oz | 70 g | 1 whole lime |
Directions
Wash & Soak the Sea Moss

Wash the sea moss to remove all debris from the sea, including salt and sand. You can do this by placing the sea moss in a large bowl, covering it with cold water, then swirling it around and draining the water. Repeat this process a few times until the sea moss is clean and the raw scent is no longer present. The sea moss will begin to expand during the washing stage.

Place the washed sea moss in a large bowl and cover it completely with clean spring water.

Cut the lime in half and squeeze both halves over the bowl, adding the lime juice to the soaking water. Drop the squeezed limes into the water and leave them for the duration of the soaking time. The lime helps to remove any remaining raw scent or ocean flavor.

Place the bowl in the refrigerator and allow the sea moss to soak between 12 and 24 hours. The longer the sea moss soaks, the more it should soften and expand.

Remove the sea moss from the refrigerator. Rewash the sea moss and place it into a clean container.
Blending the Sea Moss

After soaking, weigh the drained sea moss before adding to the blender and make a note of it. Our soaked sea moss weighed about 3.7 oz when we last made the recipe. If yours weighs more, you may need to add more water in the next step.

Add 12 fl oz of spring water into the blender.

Blend for 2-3 minutes or until it becomes smooth and has a gel-like consistency. You may need to stop and scrape down the sides of the blender to ensure even blending. The consistency should be based on your preference and intended use. If you want a thicker gel you can add more sea moss. If you want a thinner gel, just add more water.
Store the Sea Moss Gel

Transfer the sea moss gel into an airtight container or 16 oz jar with lid. You can store it in the refrigerator for about 2-3 weeks, or about 3-4 months in the freezer.

You can add sea moss gel to juices, smoothies, soups, sauces, or other dishes as a thickening agent and to benefit from its nutrients.

The thicker the sea moss, the more water you will need to use. Adjust as needed.
