Preparing Produce for Juice
The way you prep certain items will depend on functionality and your personal preferences. Here are some tips to help guide you. General Tips: Always wash produce thoroughly and use a produce or antimicrobial wash – when serving a raw, unpasteurized juice, you want to make sure the product is as clean as possible. If the peel doesn’t affect the flavor or color of the juice – don’t peel it! There is a large concentration of beneficial nutrients in the outer layer of many fruits and vegetables. If the seeds are the size of a cherry pit or larger, remove them – pits and large seeds can lend a slightly bitter flavor to juice, as well as wear down or even damage blades. For large items (pineapples and larger), I prefer to cut into quarters – this will make it easier to process the produce at a more consistent rate. Apples: You can keep whole and unpeeled. Beets: Remove the top ends and clean the bottoms thoroughly. If they are small in size, I remove the bottom skinny part as well. Berries: These small, fleshy fruits have a soft texture and do not contain a lot of liquid. I recommend using a blender to blend into a puree, then add it to the juice. To use more as a color and flavor infusion – lightly process, then press with your other recipe ingredients. Carrots: I like to remove the top ends of the carrots due to the fact that it’s tough to remove all the dirt. Cucumbers: Clean with antimicrobial wash to remove any wax. For light colored, non-green juices, I peel the cucumbers – otherwise I leave the skin on. Leafy Vegetables: In general, do not remove the stems – they typically contain a lot of flavor and juice. Coming from the farm, leafy greens usually have the most dirt on the leaves and need to be thoroughly washed. Lemons & Limes: For stronger flavored or full bodied juices, I like to grind these with the peel on – this is a preference where some might disagree – but when juiced whole, I find the peel not as bitter than it is with oranges and grapefruits. Mangos & Papayas: These are a little pricey in most locations and do not contain a lot of juice – I recommend to blend in a blender and then add to the juice. Melons: You can either peel or keep the rind on watermelon, if it is not that sweet, I would definitely peel. I like to de-seed honeydew and cantaloupe, as you get a slightly bitter flavor when you grind or process the seeds. Nuts: In general, remove shells – however, keep or order with the skins on if possible, nuts such as almonds contain a lot of flavor in the brown skin. Oranges & Grapefruits: I prefer to peel these items and then grind & press due to the bitter flavor in the peel. Pineapples: Remove the green crown and cut into quarters, but leave the skin on. Passion Fruit: In most areas these are a bit pricey, I like to add this to finished juice by scooping out the seeds and mixing them into the juice. Download Preparing Produce Guide

Pressure Below Factory Setting
This procedure will guide you through the steps to troubleshoot low pressure on the Goodnature X-1. The X-1 Juice Press is set from the factory to run at a pressure of 1800psi +/– 50psi. Adjusting your hydraulic pressure at the pump should not be required. If you are experiencing low pressure use the following steps to troubleshoot the problem: This process should only be completed by an experienced technician. Make sure the press is in the fully open position. Check to make sure your hydraulic fluid level is within one inch of the top of the hydraulic reservoir. With the press running, make sure there are no leaks coming from a piston or from any of the lines and that the lines are tightly secured. Fully close the press. If no leaks are detected, and the gauge reads below or above its recommended setting, an adjustment to your pump is required. Caution: To run your X-1 press out of its required specification may result in serious damage to your press. Never adjust the pressure above 1800 psi. To adjust your pressure you will need a 9/16” socket wrench and a 4 mm Tee-Handle Allen Key. Turn on the press and make sure it is in the fully closed position. Looking at the pump from the rear, locate the stainless steel metal ring on the right side of the pump. There you will find a 9/16” nut attached to a stem. Back-off the nut a few turns. Take your Tee-Handle Allen Key, insert it into the stem, and turn the key clockwise to increase pressure, or counterclockwise to decrease pressure on your gauge. When you have reached 1800psi +/– 50psi, tighten the nut as you hold the Allen Key in place. Watch the gauge to make sure it does not change as you tighten the nut. If the gauge’s reading does change, make your adjustment again. The nut on the stem should be tight when this procedure is finished. NOTE: If adjusting the pressure results in no change to the pressure gauge, a replacement pump may be needed. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. Replacing the Hydraulic Pressure Gauge
This procedure will guide you through the steps to replacing the hydraulic pressure gauge on the Goodnature X-1. Note: Before undertaking repair on your X-1 pressure Gauge, always unplug the machine and be certain that the directional valve is in the neutral position. 1. You may lose a small amount of hydraulic fluid in the process of replacing the pressure gauge on your X-1. It is recommended that you have a small pan to catch fluid and a rag on hand to clean up any spill. (Replacement hydraulic fluid is designated: ISO 32 Food Grade, obtainable through your local hydraulic fluid dealer) 2. Using an 9/16” Open End Wrench, break free the nut located at the base of the gauge (The nut may be very tight, be careful when exerting force to break the nut free). Hold the connector for the gauge with a 3/4″ open end wrench. 3. When the nut is free, continue turning nut counterclockwise a few revolutions. You may now remove the gauge. To remove the gauge, turn counterclockwise until gauge stem is free of Directional Valve. 4. Note: Since your new gauge is equipped with an O-ring, Teflon tape is not necessary when attaching the new gauge. 5. Insert the stem into the Directional Block, turning the gauge until it bottoms out. With the gauge in place, facing towards the round directional valve, turn the nut clockwise and tighten with your 9/16” wrench. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. To order new parts and press bags, visit the X-1 parts page.
Directional Press Handle Is loose or Not Functioning Correctly
If you are experiencing issues with the directional valve handle on the X1, it is most likely due to the fact that the handle has become loose over time. The general repair process is as follows: Remove the press handle using a 3/32″ allen key (included in the X1 tool kit). There is a screw on top of the handle, and two small set screws on the sides. Be careful not to lose the spring that may fall out when removing the handle. Re-align the pin as in the image below, and re-assemble the press handle. Please refer to the video for proper assembly. Press Will Not Move
This procedure will guide you through the steps to troubleshoot the immobility of the movable platen on your Goodnature X-1. A cursory examination of your X-1 press will eliminate or suggest why the movable platen on your machine won’t move when power is applied. Note: Prior to performing the below procedure, a qualified electrician should be consulted to make sure you have proper incoming power (Incoming power should be 208-230vac). Follow these steps to troubleshoot the issue: 1. Check the flow control valve. If it is fully closed, the press will not operate. Make sure it is turned at least one full revolution counterclockwise from the fully closed position. 2. Make sure all of the wires to the X-1 switch box and hydraulic pump motor are secured. 3. Turn the machine on, check to make sure the motor’s fan blade is rotating in the clockwise direction. If the motor does not turn on or is rotating the incorrect direction have electrician inspect wiring or reverse wiring on the motor. 4. Check the hydraulic fluid level in the hydraulic tank. It should be about 1 inch from the top of the tank with the cylinders retracted (press in the open position). 5. Turn the machine on and check for hydraulic fluid leaks on all of the lines and at their connections to the tank, hydraulic pistons and directional valve. 6. With the machine turned on and the flow control valve open and with the directional lever handle turned to the right, the platen should begin to move towards the closed position. If the press still does not move, most probable reason is the directional valve has become misaligned. See video for alignment. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. To order new parts and press bags, visit the X-1 parts page.
Replacing O Ring on Hydraulic Pump
This procedure will guide you through the steps to replacing the hydraulic pump O ring on your Goodnature X-1. Remove both lines from the hydraulic pump using a 9/16″ wrench. Remove all four bolts holding the pump to the motor, making sure not to lose the washers. Slide the tank and pump off, and drain the oil into a bucket that can hold 1-2 gallons of oil. Once the tank is empty, remove the 6 screws holding the tank to the pump. Using a rubber mallet, tap gently to separate the pump from the tank. Once separated, gently remove the old o ring being sure not to scratch pump. Slide on new O ring, making sure it is seated into the proper groove. Slide pump back into tank, spread oil on the O ring so it slides in easier. Line up screw holes so they match. Gently use a mallet to tap pump down to tank, make sure to keep screw holes lined up. Screw back in the 6 screws, tighten. Re-attach the pump to the motor, the lines to the pump and add oil. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. To order new parts and press bags, visit the X-1 parts page.
Press Platen Moving Unevenly
These steps will guide you through troubleshooting excessive uneven movement of the press platen on the Goodnature X-1. It is not uncommon in a two cylinder hydraulic system to have one cylinder begin movement slightly before the other. Your X-1 juice press has been designed to operate with these variations, and this should have no negative effect on the life of the press or the operation. But if there appears to be excessive uneven movement, there may be a few contributing factors. 1. Check to make sure your hydraulic fluid level is within 1” of the top of the tank with the press in the fully open position. If the oil level is low, check for leaks. 2. Check the four cylinder mounting bolts for proper tightness. To tighten these bolts you will need a 9/16” wrench and a 9/16” socket attached to a 6” extension. 3. Check to make sure the 1” nuts holding the cylinder rods to the platen are tight, as a loose nut may cause the platen to travel the rail unevenly. You will need a 1 1/2” closed-end wrench to accomplish this. Tighten the nut as tight as you can make it. This wrench may be purchased through our online shop. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. To order new parts and press bags, visit the X-1 parts page.
Replacing a Hydraulic Cylinder
This procedure will guide you through the steps to replace a hydraulic cylinder on your Goodnature X-1. Follow these steps: 1. Make sure the platen has been retracted (the press is fully open) and the machine is off in the neutral position, and unplugged. Removing a cylinder will require two 9/16” wrench, a 1 1/2” box end wrench, and Loctite 242. Using a 9/16” wrench, remove the two hydraulic lines which are connected to the defective cylinder. Remove the 1” nut which holds the cylinder to the moving platen. Remove the four nuts and bolts which hold the piston to the X1 frame and remove the cylinder. 2. Slide the new piston in place. Apply Loctite 242 on the four bolts and loosely attach the bolts and nuts, do not tighten. Apply two drops of Loctite 242 on the cylinder rod threads and attach the nut to the cylinder, tighten down as tight as possible. Attach the two hydraulic lines tightly to the cylinder. Turn on the press and close the platen all the way. Tighten the four bolts which hold the piston to the X1 frame, tightly, then retract the platen. 3. In the process of replacing a cylinder, you may have lost hydraulic fluid. Check your fluid level by removing the cap on the hydraulic tank. Only check fluid level when the press is in the completely open position. Your fluid should be visible to one inch below the top of the tank. Use ISO 32 Food Grade hydraulic fluid to replace lost fluid. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. To order new parts and press bags, visit the X-1 parts page.
Preventing and Fixing an Oil Leak
This procedure will guide you through the steps to preventing and fixing an oil leak on your Goodnature X-1. Prevention 1. Due to vibration, frequently tighten all of your hydraulic lines to prevent fluid leaking from the hydraulic line joints. 2. Regularly inspect all of your hydraulic lines and pistons for cracks or suspicious deformations. Troubleshooting and Fixing a Leak 1. Place the directional lever into the neutral position. 2. Turn the power to your machine off and wipe down all of the hydraulic lines, the hydraulic tank and cylinders. 3. Turn your machine on; turn the directional valve handle to close the platen. 4. Once the platen is closed and the X-1 has reached 1800 psi, check all of your hydraulic lines for any fluid leak or pooling of fluid around the joints. 5. Repeat the process leaving the press in the open position. 6. Tighten any suspect fittings. 7. If you have determined that a hydraulic line is defective, contact Goodnature for a replacement part. View Replacing a defective hydraulic line article. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. To order new parts and press bags, visit the X-1 parts page.
Replacing a Defective Hydraulic Line
This procedure will guide you through the steps to replace defective hydraulic lines on the Goodnature X-1. Replacing Hydraulic Lines 1. Make sure the press is in the fully open position and turned off. 2. Take note of the position of the defective line so that your new line is positioned in the same manner. 3. To remove a hydraulic line, two 9/16” wrenches will be needed to remove the defective line. One wrench is used to remove the nut connecting the line to its terminator, the other wrench to hold the opposite end of the line so that it remains stationary and does not twist or turn during removal. 4. Once the line is removed, attach your new line, connecting and tightening each of the nuts using two 9/16” wrenches. Make sure your new line is connected in the same position as the old line. In the process of replacing a line you may have lost hydraulic fluid. With the press fully open, check your fluid level by removing the cap on the hydraulic tank. Your fluid should be visible to one inch below the top of the tank. Use ISO 32 Food Grade hydraulic fluid to replace lost fluid. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. To order new parts and press bags, visit the X-1 parts page.
Should I Mix the Ingredients or Press Separately?
Should I juice every ingredient separately? This is definitely one of the most frequently asked questions regarding the Goodnature X-1 Cold-Press Juicer. When producing cold-press juice on Goodnature equipment, we generally recommend to combine your ingredients prior to grinding. This helps achieve an ideal grind, which creates a higher yield and is easier to press. For a more detailed explanation, visit our blog article Mixing Produce for Grinding Separately.
Changing the Oil on the X-1
This procedure will guide you through the steps to changing the oil on your Goodnature X-1. Does the oil need to be changed? If the press isn’t pressing with around 1800 PSI, check the oil level of the hydraulic reservoir with the press fully open. Tip: Remove the breather cap and dip in a rolled up piece of paper towel. The level should be 1” – 2” (25 – 50 mm) from the top and clear in color. Add Oil: If clear in color, but a drop in oil level is noticed, check the system for leaks. If oil is needed, replace with oil. Change Oil: If the oil appears to be milky in color, it’s time to change your oil. CAUTION: Soap or chemicals should NOT be applied to the inside of the tank during cleaning or draining. Introducing foreign chemicals to the inside of the tank increases the chances of contaminating the hydraulic system and components causing premature wear or damage. Ensure the breather cap is always on during operation and cleaning. A cracked or damaged cap should be replaced immediately. The breather cap does not seal the hydraulic system from outside elements. Spraying the breather cap with direct water will contaminate the hydraulic system. Steps to change the oil on the X-1: 1. Remove both lines from the hydraulic pump using a 9/16″ wrench. 2. Remove all four 9/16” bolts that secure the pump to the motor, making sure not to lose the saw tooth washers. 3. Slide the tank and pump off, remove the drain plug, and drain the oil into a bucket that can hold 1-2 gallons of oil. The silver drain plug is located on the circular face of the black tank at the base. See photos below for visual instruction. 4. Discard the used oil according to local state and federal guidelines. Most automotive shops will dispose of used oil free of charge. 5. Remove the breather cap and add fresh oil, ISO 32 Oil, into the tank. The tank capacity is about 2 gallons. After filling the tank to the correct level, reinstall the new breather cap. Check your hydraulic gauge pressure and ensure it is between 1,500 psi and 1,800 psi. If the hydraulic gauge pressure is not in the correct range we recommend adjusting the pressure set screw at the base of the tank. Watch this video, Pressure Adjust, for how this procedure is done. 6. Ongoing maintenance: We recommend watching this video, X-1 Maintenance Video Guide, which goes over the items that should be checked at various intervals. Keeping up with these items will ensure proper long-lasting operation. X-1 Maintenance Guide
Preventative Standard Maintenance for the Goodnature X-1 Cold-Press Juicer BEFORE YOU START: Disconnect all power before performing maintenance to avoid risk of serious electric shock. See below for daily, weekly and monthly standard maintenance video, downloadable guide and step by step written instructions. Refer to the Maintenance Guide that came with your machine. To order a new one, click here: Order washable Maintenance Guide or download it here Daily: (See image below / refer to p. 19 in owner’s manual) Check the black rubber shaft seal located on the grinder underneath the backing plate. Lubricate with food grade grease if overly dry and needed. If the seal is sitting tight against the hopper support plate, use a flat object like a screwdriver to move the seal forward slightly to create space. This will keep the seal from rubbing and creating friction when using the grinder. If the seal becomes cracked or breaks over time, replace the seal. Apply food grade grease to the top rail of the X-1 allowing the shims to glide along the press with minimal resistance. ProTip: Cooking oils like olive and coconut oil will build up residue making it tougher to clean over time. We recommend this food grade oil. Weekly: (See image below / refer to p. 19 in owner’s manual) Make sure the press handle is tight so it functions properly. Using an adjustable wrench, ensure the tightness of the press handle. For machines manufactured prior to July 2015, use a 3/32″ allen wrench to tighten the set screws of the press handle. Ensure the drive shaft is in place and give the shaft seal room to operate. Using a 1/8” allen wrench, tighten the set screws on the drive shaft between motor and grinder plate. Check the blades weekly to confirm they are still sharp. If they become dull to the touch, they should be replaced. You can order new blades here. Also see recommended replacement time frames in last section of this article. Monthly: (See image below / refer to p. 20 in owner’s manual) Tighten large hex nuts that are at the end of the hydraulic arms. This requires a 1- 1/2” box wrench which is supplied in the tool kit and also available in our shop. The X-1 Toolkit comes will all the tools needed to perform maintenance on the machine. Tighten the bolts and nuts that attach the hydraulic arms to the rear of the X-1 press. This requires a 9/16” wrench and a 9/16” socket wrench to tighten from both sides. Check the shims of the X-1 to make sure they have no cracks and appear in good shape; replace as needed. Tighten all bolts, nuts, and screws visible on the machine. Do not over tighten but use wrenches to ensure they will not come loose during operation. Check to ensure the grinder backing disc spacing is correct. The correct spacing allows the produce to flush from the grinder area to the bag more freely and puts less stress on the grinder motor and components. The spacing should be 1.5″ (38mm) from face of grinder backing disc to the back of grinder area as shown. If the spacing is incorrect, loosen the set screws and adjust the stub shaft. Once the correct spacing is obtained, tighten down the set screws. Check the oil level of the hydraulic reservoir with the press fully open. Tip: Remove the breather cap and dip in a rolled up piece of paper towel. The level should be 1″-2″ (25mm-50mm) from the top. If a drop in oil level is noticed, check the system for leaks. If oil is needed, replace with oil as detailed in the manual. Ensure the breather cap is always on during operation and cleaning. A cracked or damaged cap should be replaced immediately. Order the large washable version to hang in your kitchen for easy reference and reminder. For more detailed information on cleaning your X-1, refer to the X-1 Owner's Manual. Fixing a Loose Caster (Wheel)
This procedure will guide you through the steps to fixing a loose caster (wheel) on the Goodnature X-1. To tighten a loose caster, first remove the black cap just above the wheel, you can pry it off using a flat- head screwdriver. Using two, 3/4” open end wrenches, place one wrench on the top nut and the other wrench on the nut on the bottom of the casters post. Tighten the wheel’s top nut as you hold firmly onto the bottom nut with the other wrench. Tighten the nut as tight as you can. To replace a defective caster, remove the nut and washers on the top post and replace the caster. When you reattach the washers and nut, make sure the washers are put on in the same order as they were taken off; tighten the nut on top tightly. Reattach the black cap using a plastic, rubber, or wooden mallet to seat it. For additional technical support needs, contact our technical support team. Choosing the Best Grinder Blade and Press Bag
Which bag, blade, and grinder settings should you use? This is a basic guide for the EG-260 grinder used with the X-1 and X-6 presses. If you are mixing ingredients, usually the best combination is the 1/4″ blade at a speed of 40 Hz, and the medium weave press bag. We recommend mixing ingredients, since it makes the grinding process easier and you can achieve a better yield. General rules of thumb are: For firmer fruits and vegetables a smaller holed grinder disc is recommended. For softer fruits and vegetables a larger holed grinder disc is recommended. The size of the disc can be found stamped along the outer edge. For fine grind use 3/16″ or 3/32″ tooth grinder blade, medium grind – 1/4″, coarse grind- 1/2″ or 5/16″ Speed also affects the grind. Use a faster speed on the grinder for a finer grind. Trial and error is a good approach simply for learning what works best for your business and specific recipes. If you are juicing ingredients separately, this is what we recommend: Apple – Med bag / coarse grind Beet – Tight bag / fine grind Carrot – Tight bag / fine grind Celery – Med bag / medium grind Leafy Greens (kale, spinach, etc.)- Med bag / medium grind Cucumber – Med bag / medium grind Ginger – Tight bag / fine grind Grape – Tight bag / mix with other ingredients, or do not grind Pear – Tight bag / coarse grind Pineapple – Med bag / coarse grind – do not remove the rind Pomegranate – Med bag / do not grind Romaine Lettuce – Med bag / medium grind Wheat Grass and Herbs– Med bag / grind with other produce or using separate food processor Almonds and other nuts – Monofilament Nut Milk bag / soak in water and grind using a blender or food processor (don’t use the EG-260) Download Bag & Blade Guide To order new parts and press bags, visit the Goodnature shop.
Washing and Sanitizing Press Bags
These procedures will guide you through the steps to washing and sanitizing your press bags for your Goodnature cold-press juicer. Applies to Goodnature juice presses that use reusable cloth press bags. PURPOSE: To prevent foodborne illness by ensuring that all food contact surfaces are properly cleaned and sanitized. Warning: Always follow regulations stated by local health services. When to wash, rinse, and sanitize press bags: After each use Any time contamination occurs or is suspected Every four (4) hours of constant use for all food contact surfaces Wash, rinse, and sanitize press bags using the following procedure: Wash bag with water and brush to remove all surface food particles Wash surface with detergent solution Rinse surface with clean water Sanitize surface using a sanitizing solution mixed at a concentration specified on the manufacturer’s label. Keep bags soaking in sanitizing solution overnight to assist with keeping bags white. Place wet items in a manner to allow air drying before use. We do not recommend machine drying as this can result in shrinking and will lessen the lifespan of the press bags. Pro Tip: If not using that often, store dry bags in a sealed container to avoid exposure to dust or build up. Then do a quick wash before use. Do not store damp bags in a sealed container – it will make it easier for bacteria to grow. If a 3-compartment sink is used, setup and use the sink in the following manner: In the first compartment, wash with a clean detergent solution at or above 110° F or at the temperature specified by the detergent manufacturer. In the second compartment, rinse with clean water. In the third compartment, sanitize with a sanitizing solution mixed at a concentration and contact time specified on the manufacturer’s label or by immersing in hot water at or above 171° F for 30 seconds. Test the chemical sanitizer concentration by using an appropriate test kit. If a dish machine is used: Check with the dish machine manufacturer to verify that the information on the data plate is correct. Refer to the information on the data plate for determining wash, rinse, and sanitizing (final) rinse temperatures; sanitizing solution concentrations; and water pressures, if applicable. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for use. Ensure that food contact surfaces reach a surface temperature of 165° F or above if using hot water to sanitize. To order new parts and press bags, visit the Goodnature shop.
